Does IFTA apply to you?
It starts with your
vehicle and your routes.
IFTA simplifies fuel tax reporting for qualified vehicles operating in two or more member jurisdictions. Your vehicle must meet at least one of these criteria.
California-only operations do not require IFTA. Occasional interstate travel may qualify for trip permits instead. Licensing is handled through your base jurisdiction.
- 2Two axles and a gross or registered gross vehicle weight over 26,000 pounds.
- 3+Three or more axles on the power unit, regardless of weight.
- 26k+A vehicle combination with a combined gross or registered gross weight over 26,000 pounds.
The quarterly rhythm
Four deadlines.
One place for help.
Send your records ahead of the deadline so there’s time to review missing information and prepare your return.
An active California IFTA account still requires a return when your fleet does not operate or stays entirely within California.
| Reporting period | Return & payment due |
|---|---|
| Q1 January–March | April 30 |
| Q2 April–June | July 31 |
| Q3 July–September | October 31 |
| Q4 October–December | January 31* |
*Of the following year. If the due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day.
Bring the right information
Better records.
A smoother quarter.
Start with the information below. We’ll discuss what else is needed for your operation.
- Business and IFTA account information, plus your vehicle or unit list.
- Trip dates, routes, origins, destinations, and odometer readings.
- Total miles and a breakdown by state or province.
- Fuel receipts showing date, seller, quantity, fuel type, and vehicle.
- Prior returns and account notices, when applicable.
Keep records of all miles, including empty travel and nontaxable miles. Exclude DEF and separate-tank reefer fuel from propulsion-fuel totals. Exemptions depend on the jurisdiction.
A little more clarity
Your IFTA
questions, answered.
What does IFTA actually do?
IFTA lets eligible carriers report fuel use through their base jurisdiction. It covers the 48 contiguous U.S. states and 10 Canadian provinces, simplifying reporting across member jurisdictions.
Do I need to file if I did not drive?
Yes. An active California IFTA account requires a quarterly return even if your fleet did not operate or no tax is due.
How long should I keep mileage and fuel records?
Generally, keep supporting records for four years after the return’s due date or actual filing date, whichever is later. Some jurisdictions require longer retention.
Do my license and decals renew every year?
Yes. California IFTA credentials cover the calendar year and require annual renewal. Each qualified vehicle needs a license copy and two decals.
Can you help if I am behind on reports?
